Glitter & Greed: + More New Things To Stream This Weekend

4 things streaming across 4 streamers worth your time.

Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story

“If it wasn’t at the bottom of a landfill somewhere I would be watching this with my Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper” is the level of excited I am for this docu-series. The only thing I know about Lisa Frank—beyond all the stickers and products I owned as a child—are the stories that she goes after illustrators who dare use the rainbow as if she invented it. Being that almost all of the WTF teased in the trailer is gonna be new to me I am all in for this potential rainbow trainwreck.

The Empress (season 2)

This is one of those shows that is like reading a fantastic historical novel (not sure how much liberty they take with Empress Elisabeth of Austria’s real life) that is high on family drama, historical drama, and intrigue, wrapped around a love story. It is highly entertaining and has such gorgeous clothing and accessories that even if the show sucked (it absolutely does not!) I would still watch it for the costuming.

Like Water For Chocolate

One of the best adaptations ever is the 1992 film adaptation of Laura Esquivel’s Like Water For Chocolate. While I was thrilled to see that it was getting a new adaptation as a series—that would hopefully bring in new audiences—I was also a bit hesitant to watch, afraid that I would be comparing it to the original the whole time. The series actually allowed for more time to dive deeper into stories and characters—thankfully, in this case, they aren’t wasting the time like many other series that should have just been a film are—and although I found one of the first “magical food scenes” to be lacking they absolutely nailed the rest. It’s definitely worth your time, especially if you like novelons, and I hope the book finds new readers and a new audience seeks out the original film.

Tip: you need to set the language to “original” in the setting because HBO automatically set it to english dub which will throw off the viewing experience. And just a heads up, it will be extremely jarring and hilarious when you forget you set this and watch something else on MAX which is suddenly people yelling in spanish who should not be speaking in spanish. Why yes, this has happened to me after every single episode.

Bad Sisters (season 2)

The first season of this show is 4 out of 5 sisters trying to kill the 5th sister’s husband who is such an awful person that you start to root for them to succeed. I wasn’t sure if the second season was going to be able to pull off what the first season did in terms of quality and I was nervous it was going to spin in a circle, just rehashing the same things but I am thrilled to be very wrong. Four episodes into Season 2 and it is as excellent as the first season: keeps you on your toes with twists, great characters, all the sister drama, and hilarious dark comedy. (Bonus: watch Eve Hewson in The Perfect Couple on Netflix and Sharon Horgan in Catastrophe on Prime)
