This is excellent journalism

It’s not an easy read due to the topic but Rachel Aviv has written a fantastic article for The New Yorker, The Trial of Gisùle Pelicot’s Rapists United France and Fractured Her Family

I am here for the Wuthering Heights film review headlines

Prince’s Purple Rain, made with rain (by Rudy Willingham): on Threads / Instagram

When are we getting Ricky Martin’s single of Lo que le pasó a Hawáii?!

“Though it only lasted about 30 seconds, Martin’s moment was a rare act of protest from the singer; and a symbolic demonstration of how far Latin music has come in the United States.” Ricky Martin’s Super Bowl performance was an act of justice for the 1990s by Andrea Flores

How to Get To Heaven From Belfast Netflix poster

If Derry Girls married Bad Sisters this would be their baby! Basically take the fast talking bickering from DG and toss in a group of women embroiled in a crime plot after someone’s death from BS. There were moments in this show I was fighting for my life from laughing so hard, and that’s where the true genius was for me. It starts with 3 former high school friends having to reunite and travel to pay respects when they discover their 4th friend has died. Problem? They aren’t getting together out of friendship, but rather they helped cover up a crime long ago and they want to make sure that stays hidden. Turns out they knew nothing then, even less now, and someone is after them

The Lilith Fair was my first “unsupervised” concert that I went to and it has remained one of the best events I’ve ever attended. Yes, the music was great but the actual spirit and unity of everyone in the audience that night has remained a truly rare thing in this world. This documentary does a great job of showing the history of how the show came to be (tons of behind the scenes footage and interviews, then and now) which really brings to life the ‘90s. Including the unhinged hatred of women in everything that they do. (If you’re feeling nostalgic for ‘90s music also check out the Counting Crows documentary on HBO).

There is a type of Kdrama that feels like “everything but the kitchen sink” and these either really work for me or really don’t—no in between. Lovely Runner has the romance plot, time slip, a serial killer, family drama, plenty of twists
all of which worked to create a really fun show with some swoony moments.

I watched this steamy hockey romance adaptation when it dropped—very impatiently, waiting every week for a new episode—and have since rewatched it. This is the standard that all romance adaptations should be. I’m also super glad to see so many discussions about the romance genre, why it’s so popular, and how the sex scenes are part of the plot. The amount of gatekeepers in publishing and the entertainment industry that were shocked by Heated Rivalry’s success are why we rarely get nice things. Anyways, may the memes this show produced live forever. I am of course excitedly awaiting the second season. In the meantime the second someone wants to make a lot of money and get the actors to narrate the audiobooks I’m going to inhale those.

And finally, some recently acquired galleys I’m excited to read

4 book covers How Simi Got Her Groom Back, The Clock House Murder, My Name WAs Baby, The Plans I have For You

How Simi Got Her Groom Back by Sonali Dev (March)

Sonali Dev forever has my heart for her Bollywood romance trilogy.

The Clock House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji, Ho-Ling Wong (Translator) (June)

I absolutely love Japanese crime novels.

My Name Was Baby: An Intersex Memoir by Chris M. Arnone, Alicia Roth Weigel (Foreword by) (June)

I know the author but I really liked Alicia Roth Weigel’s Inverse Cowgirl memoir and this cover is great so the last two reasons would have made this an automatic read.

The Plans I Have for You by Lai Sanders (March)

“Feminine rage” is all I needed.

And that’s it for now. Here’s hoping spring makes up for this winter.

Thanks for reading!
